To focus on the process rather than the numbers, students should use cell referencing when writing their formulas. Cell referencing in a spreadsheet is when students use the value of a cell in the formula rather than the numerical values. If the spreadsheet has a count of the parts of something and a value of the whole, students can demonstrate their understanding of calculating the percentage by typing the equation into the spreadsheet. For example, =W2/I4 rather than =36/116.
